Dinosaur Cake Smash | Cape Town Cake Smash Photographer | Michelle Koekemoer Photography

The dinosaur-themed cake smash session we had with little AJ is such a good representation of what to expect throughout a cake smash session. He started out a little hesitant during the pre-portraits, was very serious and focussed during the actual smash and ended with lots of smiles in the bubble bath.

After every Cake Smash, I turn to Norman and say “What a cutie!”

But little AK – he was super cute! We had the full range of emotions with this one. From happy smiles to a little lip curling at the end. No tears though!

Just look at my selection of favourites from the session and see for yourself.

One of the reasons I love cake smash sessions is that it allows me to use my love for arts and crafts to create beautiful backdrops for each client. Nuhaa asked us to create an “Under the Sea” theme for Little Hanna, and I must say, the colours we used looks good!

Hanna was an adorable – but serious – mermaid that enjoyed smashing her cake!

When Logan’s Mommy asked me for a ladybug theme, I had no idea how adorable it could be.

We kept it simple and made a tree as well as some ladybugs from paper plates and added that and balloons onto a cloudy sky backdrop. And with the red outfit, Logan looked like a little ladybug herself.

May seems like the perfect time to do a Winter Wonderland themed cake smash, and little Maliha did such a great job smashing her cake. We had icing sugar – and bubbles – all over the place by the time she was done. And speaking of done – she loved our bath so much that she did not want to get out!

Boho Cake Smash | Cape Town Cake Smash Photographer | Michelle Koekemoer Photography

For Aziza’s Cake Smash, Mom wanted a boho theme but did not want something overly minimalistic. So we went with some ivy leaves and balloons to keep things pretty and elegant.

On the day, Aziza was not interested in sitting AT ALL. Not on any of our little chairs or benches or the floor – but luckily the crown on the cake did the trick, and we could snap a couple of pictures of her enjoying her cake.

We love adding new themes to our line-up. So when Angela suggested a Disney Baby theme for Connors’ cake smash, I couldn’t wait to start making cute little figures. And speaking of cute, just look at that hair!

Enjoy my favourites from the session 🙂

We have such cute clients, and little Cylas was no exception – look at his reaction trying to catch the bubbles!

During the cake smash, he was all serious and very focussed. But when it was time for the bubble bath, it was all fun and games.

When I asked Melissa what theme she would like for the cake smash session she booked with us, her answer was “Whatever you think will be cute!” So we created a carnival-themed set for little Emilio.

Just look at this set of images – I love how he goes from complete hesitance to total destruction.

Melissa, thank you for trusting me with this session. You walked into the studio not knowing what to expect.

Grey and Gold Cake Smash | Cape Town Cake Smash Photographer | Michelle Koekemoer Photography

When Janine and I chatted about the theme for Gabriels’ Cake Smash session, she wanted something elegant. We decided on a grey and gold colour scheme so Norman I build a balloon wall for the backdrop – we are rather proud of our creation – and I just that loooong after the session was done, we still had sensitive fingers.

Gabriel is the sweetest boy with the most striking eyes. But he was not interested in his cake AT ALL – we even got his older brother involved to see if we can get him to persuade Gabriel to give it a bash. But nothing.

He was happy to play with balloons and catch bubbles though, so that is what we did. And that is just how it goes when you work with kids. You need lots of patience, and you have to be flexible in your plans. In the end, you will still get beautiful images of your little one that showcases their personality.
